Determining Your Skin Undertone

Determining Your Skin Undertone
The biggest question I get asked as a Makeup Artist is 'What is my skin undertone' or 'How do I find my skin undertone'. There are many ways to determine your natural undertones and there a few tests and tricks that can be slightly unreliable. Today I thought I would tell you some simple tips and tricks to getting you 100% sure of what undertone you really are, please note that not all the tests will work for everyone and if you are still confused it may be best to ask a professional next time you are near a makeup counter.

Cool Undertone

We will start with a Cool Undertone. People with a cool undertone tend to have blue almost purple veins, you can check this by simply looking at the veins on your wrist. hold it up to a light and see what colour your veins really are. Another factor is that you easily burn in the sun, literally even the little amount of sun will turn you into Krusty Krab or if you are one to catch the sun and never tan your most likely a cool undertone. It can also be determined by what we wear and how certain shades look on us, if blue, purple or greens look amazing on you, you are rocking a cool undertone. The same can be said for jewellery if silver pieces seem to look good on you, you are indeed a cool undertone. Lastly there is the paper test, hold up a piece of white paper next to your face and neck area, you can almost see the shade jump out at you, if you seen a slight pink tone or red you are 100% a cool undertone (be sure to do this in good lightening)

Warm Undertones

Moving onto warm undertones, straight away from looking at the women above you notice they have an almost yellow/ golden look to their skin. This is the first sign of a warm undertone so when you do the paper test you will see a gold, yellow tone. When it comes to the veins test you will notice your veins are a green colour, or even slightly blue green. Gold jewellery will look great on you and earthy tones such as red, yellows and oranges will look amazing on you. The last test would be the sun test, if you catch the sun and tan (not burn) you are most likely a warm undertone.

Neutral Undertone

A neutral undertone is a mix of both, all shades look good on you, your skin is neither pink or yellow/gold but can be a mix of both, sometimes you can lean more on one side so keep that in mind when choosing foundations etc. When you do the vein test you may see blue & green veins and as for sun exposure you may burn but then eventually tan, or not burn at all but just tan. Basically its just a mix match of all symptoms of a warm and gold undertone so the sky is the limit haha. Both gold and silver jewellery will look good on you and you can rock pretty much most colours. Surprisingly  a lot of people are a neutral undertone but as they may lean towards maybe a warm undertone they tend to ignore the cool undertones in their skin (or vice versa) so have a good look at your skin if you think you are a neutral undertone it can be tricky to figure out.

So there are some simple tips and tricks on how to determine your skin's undertone. Finding out this information will make life a lot easier when it comes to buying makeup and of course on deciding what colours look best on you. I hope this post helped.
